Making the Valley the very best it can be

Our 10 year plan

Greenfield Valley’s 10-Year Big Picture Strategy up to 2035

In ten years the Greenfield Valley will be one of the top ten destinations in north Wales with an engaging mix of cultural, environmental, heritage and leisure experiences. To achieve this over the next ten years we will:

1. Treasure our heritage by taking care of the Valley’s monuments, buildings and collections and helping people enjoy and understand them (Strategic Objective 1).

We intend that in ten years:

  • All the Valley’s scheduled monuments will be accessible to the public with funded programmes to ensure that they are retained for future generations.
  • The Valley’s Museum will be an accredited museum with the objects and artefacts in its collection displayed and cared for appropriately.
  • The important industrial story of the Valley itself will feature strongly in the Valley’s collections, displays and exhibitions.

2. Cherish our natural environment by protecting, maintaining, managing and enhancing the Valley’s natural environment (Strategic Objective 2).

We intend that in ten years:

  • There will be a funded programme caring for all the green spaces in the Valley making these areas more attractive and more biodiverse whilst contributing to carbon offsetting, reducing costs and keeping visitors safe.
  • The water areas of the valley will be managed to be more attractive and more biodiverse whilst still fulfilling their role for water storage and flood relief.
  • The amount of wildlife (insects, mammals and birds) in the Valley will be at least the same, and preferably increased from, current levels, with the site managed to attract new species.
  • The Valley will be on target to become net carbon zero by 2050 in line with Welsh National Policy
  • There will be a hub location in the Valley where the natural environment is described and interpreted

3. Strengthen our communities through the provision of social, leisure, health, wellbeing and learning experiences for local people (Strategic Objective 3).

We intend that in ten years:

  • The Valley will host over 200 experiences each year tailored to the needs of local communities.
  • The Valley will be at the centre of a strong partnership of local organisations that work with the Valley to provide experiences that benefit members of local communities.
  • Six new spaces in the Valley will be identified/developed to accommodate new experiences for local communities.
  • The Greenfield Valley Trust will play a leading role in a thriving partnership of organisations committed to the enhancement of Holywell – Greenfield area and its communities

4. Delight our tourists by attracting and welcoming tourists to the Valley giving them an experience that exceeds their expectations (Strategic Objective 4).

We intend that in ten years:

  • The Valley will be welcoming 100,000 visitors a year to its green spaces, buildings, activities and events.
  • Attractions in the Valley will be open throughout the year.
  • Four new/enhanced tourist facilities will be open in the Valley attracting new tourists and encouraging repeat visits from previous visitors.
  • The Valley will be seen as providing good quality, good value, interesting and unusual venues for events and activities.

5. Direct our organisation by working well as a charitable Trust, being efficient and effective in the way we do things and working towards securing long-term economic sustainability for the Valley (Strategic Objective 5).

We intend that in ten years:

The Greenfield Valley Trust will have:

  • Reviewed the way it works as a Trust, and the way it works with Flintshire County Council, to make sure these arrangements remain the most effective to serve the Valley.
  • Found money from other sources, such as grants, to provide more resources for: – organising and doing things in the Valley, getting grants, providing more volunteering opportunities, managing events and managing the museum.
  • Increased its earned income by 25% from 2021 (Any surplus is spent in the Valley)
  • Reviewed and enhanced the Valley’s retail and catering

We also intend that the Valley will:

  • Be on target to become net carbon zero by 2050
  • Be the recipient of awards and accreditations that demonstrate the successful achievement of the strategic objectives
  • Run a successful and very popular volunteer programme that supports the Valley and provides local people with interesting opportunities for learning, social activity and personal wellbeing.
